Good as Glass: Share Skipton Take 1st Place at Regional Awards
We were at Harrogate Pavilions for the North Yorkshire Community Awards on the 21st of November, having reached the finals in the Community Impact category ...and wouldn’t you know it, Share Skipton won 1st place!
The judges recognised the incredible work of all our hard-working volunteers, as well as the way more and more Skiptoners are using our services to share, re-use, mend and learn. Further benefits include the reduction of waste / accompanying greenhouse gas emissions, opening up access to essential items for households that might struggle to afford, creating opportunities to take part in community climate action, and highlighting the skills of local repairers. Collaborative ties with other local and regional groups factored into the decision too. The charity also demonstrates strong planning for the future, including goals to open more hours each week and to organise more resource-sharing and skill-learning events.
On top of a presenting shiny glass plaque, paper certificate, and £1,000 prize money for first place, North Yorkshire Council were kind enough to assemble a short video showcase for us:
“In a time of rising costs and climate urgency, Share Skipton is offering practical solutions that bring people together and prove that sustainable living and stronger communities go hand in hand. It is making its vision a reality, one borrowed item, one repaired lamp, one friendly conversation at a time. ”
The award ceremony marked the end of the day-long North Yorkshire Council Wider Partnership Conference, where we took time to share experiences and ideas with other organisations from our region.
Short-listed from 70 nominees over three categories, fellow finalists for Community Impact were Exclusively Inclusive (organisers of Happy Mondays Together, in Skipton) and Friends of Dean Rd. & Manor Rd. Cemetery (Scarborough).
The Collaborative Spirit award went to a food-waste partnership between Malton Free Fridge and the Wesley Centre (Malton), while a youth support volunteer from Harrogate, Kashmir Kaur, took the individual Commitment award.
Thank you again to everyone who has volunteered for, relied on, and supported us - this amazing win is down to all of you!
